This comment is a record of the above post as it was originally written, in case the post is deleted or edited. We've been together 2 years, living together 1. Shes 30, and moved to the US from the UK right before we met. I don't mean detailed specifics only a history major would know, I mean things I'd assume pretty much anybody would have at least heard about in passing somehow, at some point. For example, she didn't know Italy was allied with Germany in WWII, or who Moussalini was. Or she never heard of the Hindenburg. Last night I was telling her about how I was was watching the new series about Chernobyl on HBO, and how interesting it seemed. She kind of just gave a disinterested/blank answer. After that I kind of just stared blankly at her. Its such a famous disaster I was genuinely shocked how someone would have never encountered mention of it. I told her it would be like if I told her I never heard of the Titanic before. She then called me an asshole for making her feel bad and cried. After calming her down I went on to explain to her what happened. She went to art school instead of regular university, and is in a creative profession. From a distance, it’s beautiful. An unearthly shaft of blue light shoots from the core of the V.I. Lenin Nuclear Plant in Pripyat, Ukraine and into the heavens. People from the surrounding neighborhoods, awakened by the sound and shake of an explosion, leave their homes and gather to watch the glow. As radioactive ash falls on the crowds like snow, they watch the inferno and talk about what might have gone wrong at the local nuclear power plant. This is just one of the many harrowing scenes from Chernobyl, a new miniseries airing on HBO. Chernobyl is a horror story, one that borrows the tropes and themes of horror fiction to tell the story of a nuclear nightmare compounded by human arrogance and bureaucratic lies. Horror stories work because they tap into real and prescient fears of the audience, and nuclear power plants are a reality for billions of people. But make no mistake, this HBO drama belies the absolute terror and carnage the event wreaked on millions of lives across the European continent, specifically in the path of the wind currents that took highly radioactive material airborne. There are places within Ukraine you will never be able to see, long abandoned. Through Legasov’s notes, we learn he discovered the KGB redacted two pages of key Intel the fated plant technicians did not have to understand their predicament and the reactor’s lethal design flaw. Even more chilling is the realization this was exactly the time period when Vladimir Putin served in the KGB. Yet despite the calamitous outcome, he praised the people of Ukraine and of Legasov’s bravery and added: “…It was also the result of individual humans doing the things that individual humans often do. What I found so oddly beautiful about the stories that I read was that in response to what I would consider to be the worst of human behavior, we saw the best of human behavior. Chernobyl 5 Episode.
“Insane attention to tiny details, clothing, watches, glasses, everything. Shooting in Lithuania, a lot of our crew were old enough to remember what it was like living in the Soviet Union. They would let us know, ‘You know, if you brought your lunch to work, you would use a briefcase for that. What may stand out to viewers is that no one in the series speaks with a recognizably Russian accent. As Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgard, Emily Watson, and others navigate their respective characters’ place in this unfolding saga, they do so without too much vocal affect. For Johan Renck, who directed all five installments, that decision only emphasized the other elements of their performances that were true to the Soviet experience. “It’s the culture that you need to embrace and it’s really hard to embrace culture without the use of language,” Renck said. “But then, it was trying to find some kind of Soviet behaviorisms, whatever you can do to try to sort of promote a cultural expression and body language and facial expressions. To be honest, one of the tricky parts is that was we were using mostly British actors.|Do you know what actually happened at Chernobyl? HBO and Sky Atlantic’s new drama recounts the disaster under a horrifying, gripping lens, in one of the best new shows of the year. While the April 1986 Chernobyl accident is one of the most noted nuclear disasters in history, the name has become synonymous with dark tourism and cheap horror movies for recent generations. This new drama, created and written by Craig Mazin (Identity Thief, The Hangover Part II), spotlights the real horror in the disaster; a power struggle between politicians and scientific experts with thousands of lives hanging in the balance. The first episode kicks off after the fallout of the disaster, as a troubled physicist Valery Legasov (Jared Harris) kills himself in his apartment. We’re then taken back 24 months prior preceding the catastrophe in 1986, as civilians in Chernobyl, Ukraine are suddenly alerted to a concerning boom from the nearby power plant, with smoke bellowing into the sky.
